Jesse Royal, born in 1989 and coming from Jamaica, is the new famous name of the reggae international scene.
In an article from the last year in Vogue magazine, Royal was described like an artist who had revised reggae music, “Reggae revival”, with other young singers such as Chronixx and Protoje. We interviewed Jesse Royal during the only Italian date of his European tour at the One Love Festival in Lignano Sabbiadoro.
Jesse, one of the leaders of the new generation of international reggae, has already released many hits as”Cool & Dreadly”, produced by Damian Marley, and he told our microphones about the union with his colleague of the same age, especially with Daniel Bambaata Marley who considers as a real brother. We could deepen some aspect of his mondial success who is living with his music, with Jamaican origins, but now very appreciated in Europe and the USA too. The singer HAD left for us a very special greeting…
Classe ’89 ed originario della Jamaica Jesse Royal è il nuovo famosissimo nome della scena reggae internazionale. In un articolo uscito lo scorso anno sulla prestigiosa rivista Vogue quest’ultimo veniva descritto come l’artista che aveva riportato in auge la reggae music in una sorta di “Reggae Revival” insieme ad altri artisti giovanissimi come Chronixx e Protoje. Abbiamo avuto modo di intervistare il ventiseienne Jesse Royal durante l’unica data italiana del suo tour europeo che si è tenuta lo scorso 22 luglio al One Love Festival di Lignano Sabbiadoro (UD).
Jesse, tra i maggiori esponenti della new generation del reggae mondiale, ha già lanciato molte hits come “Cool & Dreadly” prodotta da Damian Marley e ha raccontato ai nostri microfoni dell’unione con i suoi colleghi coetanei, primi tra tutti Daniel Bambaata Marley che considera come un vero e proprio fratello. Abbiamo potuto approfondire alcuni aspetti del successo mondiale che sta vivendo per mezzo della sua musica dalle origini jamaicane, ma sempre più apprezzata in Europa e in America. Il cantante in attesa che esca il suo prossimo disco ci ha lasciato un saluto molto speciale contenuto nel video in basso.
G.V. Tonight your exclusive date in Italy for One Love Festival (Lignano Sabbiadoro). How did u feel the massive?
Stasera la tua unica data italiana del tour europeo al One Love Festival di Lignano Sabbiadoro. Come hai sentito la risposta del pubblico?
J. R. This is the first time in that part of Italy and I felt a very explosive massive. I heard a lot of positive vibes by the audience and the reception was lovely.
Per me è stata la prima volta che ho suonato in questa parte d’Italia e la massive mi è parsa veramente esplosiva. Ho sentito molte vibrazione positive e la risposta del pubblico è stata adorabile.
G.V. You’re young, but you’re already very respected from the international reggae musical scene. What is the secret of your success ?
Sei giovane ma sei già rispettato tantissimo dalla scena reggae internazionale. Quale è il segreto del tuo successo?
J. R. I love Jah and he is powerful. The power of our job is understanding that when too much is given, too much is expected, so we take this thing as serious, ‘cause is our job, you know, and is a 24 hours for 7 days job.
Amo Jah e lui è potente. La forza del nostro lavoro è capire che quando si da troppo, automaticamente si riceve troppo. Quindi prendiamo la musica sul serio perché è il nostro lavoro, si sa, ed è una professione che ti occupa 24 ore su 24 per 7 giorni di lavoro.
G. V. What about your last featuring with Chronixx and Protoje… You are a new generation of reggae artists…
Cosa ci dici sui tuoi ultimi featuring con Chronixx e Protoje… Siete una nuova generazione di artisti reggae…
J. R. Exactly, we are a new generation of reggae artists. I mean with new generation a society that is going on…a tree comes, brings fruit, fruit brings seeds, somebody plants the seeds and next tree come…And we’ re the seeds of what it was grown before, we’re really trying to grow flowers and bring some food, so the other youth can take all of that, you know, and shake up the system which about yes we can, I really can,, we’re both changing in a bigger link, you know, I mean so we’ re doing a good work for our generation, which is all we can do, and we’ re sure that the youth coming after us will have all they need for them. I’m 26, Chronixx 23 and we created a big connection because we have the same values in life. Daniel Bambaata Marley for me is like a brother too. We groove all together.
Esattamente siamo una nuova generazione di artisti reggae. Voglio dire una nuova generazione della società odierna … Quando un albero arriva porta frutta, la frutta porta semi, qualcuno pianta i semi e il prossimo albero nascerà … E noi siamo i semi di quello che è stato coltivato prima, stiamo veramente cercando di coltivare fiori e di portare un po’ di cibo tra di noi, cosìcché anche altri giovani possano prendere tutto questo per scuotere il sistema attuale. Siamo quindi in un grande collegamento tra nuovi nomi e stiamo facendo un buon lavoro per la nostra generazione. Siamo sicuri che i giovani a venire dopo di noi avrAanno tutto il necessario per poter continuare la nostra opera. Ho 26 anni, Chronixx ne ha 23 ma abbiamo gli stessi valori della vita. Daniel Bambaata Marley per me è come un fratello. E ci divertiamo a comporre tutti insieme.
G. V. What is the message of your songs ?
Quale è il messaggio delle tue canzoni ?
J. R. The message, well… be in love! But is also other. We talk about our reality, we’re facing, we have thinking and verbal options (tools) for we. The message is the Jah willing, I go live on for the future generations (for the generations to come).
Il messaggio, bene… è soprattutto d’amore! Ma è anche altro. Parliamo della nostra realtà, abbiamo un modo di pensare e lo palesiamo attraverso le frasi che sono come strumenti per noi. Il messaggio è la volontà di Jah che desidera che venga direttamente alle generazioni future (alle generazioni a venire).
